It was the fifth Moghul ruler, Shah Jehan, who created the world’s best known poem to love the Taj Mahal. Situated on the western banks of the River Yamuna the taj was built as a grand mausoleum by Shah Jehan in the memory of his favourite wife Mumtaz.

The Taj Mahal is the mausoleum built by Shah Jehan for his queen Mumtaz Mahal. The construction is said to have taken 22 years to complete, starting from 1631, with over 20,000 craftsmen working round the clock.

Of special interest here is Jilo Khana on the main entrance, built of red sandstone. The Museum to the left of the central chamber has details on construction of the Taj.

The Taj Mahal like other mounuments in Agra is open from sunrise to sunset. From 6 to 8am and 4pm to 7pm. Entry fee Rs105, from 8am to 4 pm, it is Rs 15. Free admission for children under 15 on all days at all the monuments.

The Moghul legacy is equally in evidence in the other remarkable buildings in the city. The Agra Fort, itmad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb, Sikandra, Jamma Masjid and Chini Ka-roza stand as a testimony to the glory of the great South Asian dynasty.

Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km away from the bustle of Agra is a must see. Built by Akbar in 1568, it was later abandoned 14 years later as water was in scarce supply. Built of red sandstone Fatehpur Sikri is a fine example of the fusion of Indian and Moghul styles.

Agra Fort, on the banks of the Yamuna River is in the city centre. There are a number of exquisite buildings within its portals such as samman Burj, where shahjehan was held captive by his son. Moti Masjid, a white marble mosque, Diwn e adm, Diwan-e-Khaas, Jehangir’s Palace, Khaas Mahal and Shish Mahal.
